Director of Development - Full time The Sacramento Zoological Society, the 501(c)3 non-profit corporation that manages the Sacramento Zoo, is seeking an experienced, innovative and dynamic Director of Development to manage its development operations. The Director of Development is responsible for planning, leading and implementing the development strategy of the Sacramento Zoological Society (SZS). Reporting to the Zoo Director/CEO, the Director of Development will direct the coordination and implementation of the contributed income programs on behalf of the organization’s goals and objectives to maximize potential and increase the base of support from donors.
This Director of Development will join the staff and board of directors in the zoo’s mission to inspire appreciation, respect and a connection with wildlife and nature through education, recreation and conservation.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Create and implement annual development plan and strategy
- Cultivate and nurture relationships with current and potential individual donors and corporate & foundation sponsors
- Direct the production, coordination and implementation of all solicitations
- Oversee yearly annual report and assist in writing/editing Zoo newsletter and other marketing materials
- Establish benefits, privileges, recognition, acknowledgements and incentives for donors in order to maintain and improve relations
- Working with the Corporate Sponsorship Manager, write grant proposals and reports to corporate, foundation and government funders
- Develop and grow SZS donor base; manage annual giving campaign; cultivate major gifts
- Develop and manage SZS Board fundraising capacity; produce support materials for Board Fund Drives
- Promote and develop program for estate planning to ensure Zoo’s future
- Supervise Membership department and activities
- Supervise activities of staff engaged in maintaining Raiser’s Edge database and records of contributors and grants; maintain security and quality controls
- Maintain accurate accounting of all unrestricted income and its sources; interface with staff and Finance Department to fulfill information requests and maintain reporting accuracy
- Manage fund development budget
Supervisory Responsibilities: Supervise all Development and Membership staff. Carry out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.
Qualifications:
- Minimum of five years experience in nonprofit development field
- Knowledge of fundraising management
- Proficient computer skills and a knowledge of Raiser’s Edge
- Strong verbal communication skills and demonstrated ability to write clearly and persuasively, as well as experience in grant writing
- Thorough understanding of all components of a diversified funding base
- Proven management and leadership qualities
- Demonstrated ability to prospect, cultivate and manage new donors
- High energy, positive attitude, organized; demonstrates flexibility, problem solving, teamwork and attention to detail; high degree of initiative
