Job Openings at the Sacramento Zoo 

Open since 1927, the Sacramento Zoo is home to over 140 native, exotic and endangered species and is one of over 200 accredited institutions of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums. The Zoo is wholly managed by the Sacramento Zoological Society, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, and provides an educational and recreational resource to the Sacramento Region.

Membership Assistant - Part-time
Position open 8/16/2014. Weekday, weekend and some evening availability required. Reports to the Membership Coordinator.

Summary
The Membership Assistant is a customer service position primarily responsible for the sales, processing and fulfillment of memberships. The Membership Assistant will be part of the Membership Department team, which serves as the primary customer service contact for both Zoo members and daily visitors; acting as an ambassador for the Zoo’s mission of education and conservation. This is an entry level part-time position, weekdays, weekends and some evenings required.

Responsibilities

  • Provide excellent customer service at the membership admissions gate, membership office, via internet, written correspondence and on phones
  • Pay strict attention to detail in order to maintain an accurate donor database
  • Serve as an ambassador of the Sacramento Zoo for all members and visitors, informing them of upcoming events and special promotions
  • Work individually and as part of a team to achieve membership goals
  • Ability to work in a small office with constant interruptions
  • Maintain accurate cash drawer and presentable work space
  • Assist with daytime and evening events (set up and tear down)
  • Assist with other departments’ needs as necessary
  • Ability to lift and carry 50 lbs.
  • Other duties as assigned

Required Experience
This person should be outgoing and enjoy working with all types of people. High school diploma or GED is required. Attention to detail and excellent oral communication and customer service skills are required. Familiarity with computers needed.

Events Coordinator - Full-time
Under the supervision of the Marketing Director, the Events Coordinator is responsible for developing, scheduling, servicing and coordinating zoo events and zoo rentals including private events, weddings, birthday parties and Zoo fundraisers.  Events will take place primarily on evenings and weekends with administrative duties during the week as needed.  This is a full time position, requiring a highly flexible schedule.

The candidate must be a self-starter who takes initiative and can think on his/her feet. Must be able to multi-task and remain calm and professional in stressful situations.

The Sacramento Zoo is a non-profit public facility focused on family and children’s activities. The Sacramento Zoo is a unique and engaging work environment. Candidates must have a great sense of humor and be comfortable working with all types of people.

Responsibilities

  • Works with the Marketing Director to develop and facilitate annual events marketing plan, establish rental fees, revenue goals and budget
  • Builds prospective client base through site inspections and telephone sales
  • Schedules all aspects of events; including client contact, sales, rental   agreements, site surveys, permits, billing and  calendar maintenance
  • Works with outside vendors for audio/visual, lighting, equipment, logistic and décor needs. Works with on-site catering manager and other zoo staff for menu planning, educational and entertainment needs
  • Works as staff representative or supervises and schedules other staff for zoo and rental functions
  • Ability to lift and carry 30 lbs.
  • Other duties as assigned

Required Experience:
This person should be outgoing and possess excellent oral communication skills, attention to detail and customer service. A minimum of two years events, catering or hospitality management is required.

Events Assistant - Full-time

  • Assist in event preparation; including event sheet and contract writing, communication with outside vendors and other Zoo staff, and processing, billing, and event wrap-up reports
  • Assist in execution of events; including logistics, coordination with catering company, and physical set up and tear down (including tents, tables, chairs, etc.)
  • Works with the volunteer coordinator, assisting in volunteer placement
  • Provide excellent customer service to a wide variety of clientele in person, via email, phone and written correspondence
  • Ability to lift and carry 30 lbs.
  • Other duties as assigned

Required Experience
This person should be outgoing and enjoy working with all types of people. Experience with events and catering is a must. Excellent oral communication skills, attention to detail and customer service skills are required.  Must be versed with Microsoft Office including Word, Excel and PowerPoint. High school diploma or GED is required; some college level course work preferred. Flexibility is a must!
