Open since 1927, the Sacramento Zoo is home to over 140 native, exotic and endangered species and is one of over 200 accredited institutions of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums. The Zoo is wholly managed by the Sacramento Zoological Society, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, and provides an educational and recreational resource to the Sacramento Region.


Visitor Services Associate - Part time, seasonal
Position Summary: Reports to the Guest Services Manager. The Sacramento Zoo is looking for an exceptional Visitor Services Associate with experience interacting with and assisting guests.  Under the supervision of the Guest Service Supervisor, the Visitor Service Associate is responsible for providing admission sales and ride tickets, driving the trackless zoo train and operating the zoo carousel. Other duties will include day to day cashier duties, acting as a guest liaison, answering questions and inquires. The Visitor Service Associate provides additional help wherever the need arises at the Front Gate

This is a part-time seasonal position.  The Visitor Services Associate must be available to work Tuesdays, Thursdays and weekends, with some flex hours available during specific times of the year.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Ensures that each customer receives outstanding service by providing a friendly environment, which includes greeting and acknowledging every customer.
  • Accurately and efficiently maintain all sales transactions at the Point of Sale cash registers for Zoo Admissions and ride ticket sales.
  • Maintain an awareness of all promotions and advertisements.
  • Responsible for monitoring the main entrance during after-hours rentals.
  • Run both the Zoo train and carousel in accordance with State regulations
  • Manages crowds, lines, customer activities for overall safety and pleasant experiences for guests.
  • Assist in emergency and lost child procedures.
  • Maintain orderly appearance of register and work areas and keep supplies stocked.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements:

  • Cash handling and customer service experience are preferred.
  • Proficient in use of cash register and calculator
  • Must have excellent customer service and team work skills as well as communicate with coworkers and supervisors effectively.
  • High school degree required.
  • Must have current driver’s license of at least 2 years with a clean insurable driving record.
  • Must be flexible, reliable and self-motivated team player.
  • Must be able to actively work in inclement weather.
  • Some areas require the ability to stand for long periods of time
  • Represent the Zoo with an enthusiastic and cheerful demeanor.
  • Provide updated general zoo information.

Education Assistant – Part time

Position Summary: Under the supervision of the Director of Education, the Education Assistant provides general office help, supervises teen volunteers on Sundays, generates reports and inputs data, answers registration questions, helps prepare for classes, monitors and provides upkeep to classroom file system, provides support on education projects and special events as needed. 

This is a part-time position approximately 20 hrs. a week. Must be available to work Fridays, Sundays, and either Wednesdays or Thursdays (Some flex hours may be available certain times of the year).

Specific Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assist with teaching Pre-K classes
  • Provide back up to Education Staff
  • Supervise teen volunteers on Sundays
  • Data entry
  • Help prepare for classes
  • Monitor supplies

Overnight Assistant - Part time, seasonal
Position Summary: Reports to the Education Program Coordinator and Overnight Coordinator. The Overnight Assistant (OA) works alongside the Overnight Coordinator (OC) to facilitate a family based overnight program at the Zoo.  The OA specifically supervises the teen volunteers, meal preparation, and helps to oversee the activity stations and evening program. The OA should be ready to assist the OC in whatever is needed, be flexible, and think on their feet. This is a seasonal part time position that is approximately 22 hours per week on a week when an overnight is scheduled; including spending the night during our Family Overnight programs.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Coordinates and supervises teen volunteers during the overnight.
  • Communicates effectively with both the Overnight Coordinator and Education Program Coordinator between overnights.
  • Prepares and inventories materials for overnights.
  • Assists Overnight Coordinator in the facilitation of the overnight program.
  • Evaluates teen volunteers following each overnight and effectively communicates with the Teen Coordinator
  • Troubleshoots after each overnight, and works with the OC and Education Program Coordinator to remedy any issues before the next overnight.
  • Follows all safety procedures and act calmly in the case of an emergency.
  • Provides great customer service to all participants.
  • Presents at the camp/overnight training for counselors on June 5th
  • Completes special projects as assigned by the Education Program Coordinator

Qualifications:

Overnight Coordinator - Part time, seasonal
Position Summary: Reports to the Education Program Coordinator. The Overnight Coordinator (OC) works with the Overnight Assistant (OA) to put on facilitate a family based overnight program at the Zoo.  The OC is responsible for supervising the overall program, the OA, all activities and stations, and acts as a go-to for guests.  The OC is responsible for coordinating with overnight staff and volunteers to ensure that the evening is running smoothly and on schedule.  This is a seasonal part time position that is approximately 22 hours per week on a week when an overnight is scheduled; including spending the night during our Family Overnight programs.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Coordinates and supervises staff & volunteers during Family Overnight Safari Programs (FON).
  • Takes the lead in presentation of the overnight programs.
  • Develops and/or assists in developing the overnight program curriculum
  • Follows a pre-written overnight schedule and keeps all participants on track and in the appropriate areas of the Zoo.
  • Prepares and inventories materials for overnights.
  • Writes a detailed report following each overnight and effectively communicates with the Education Program Coordinator.
  • Troubleshoots after each overnight, and works with the OA and Education Program Coordinator to remedy any issues before the next overnight.
  • Presents the overnight training to the docents on an agreed upon weekend evening at 5pm.
  • Follows all safety procedures and acts calmly in the case of an emergency.
  • Provides great customer service to all participants
  • Presents at the camp/overnight training for counselors on June 5th
  • Completes special projects as assigned by the Education Program Coordinator

Zoo Camp Teacher - Part time, seasonal

Position Summary: Reports to the Education Program Coordinator. Zoo Camp Teachers design curriculum and plan camp weeks based on objectives provided. Teachers are in charge of leading a class of campers as well as mentoring and overseeing a Teacher’s Assistant and teen volunteers. This is a seasonal position which runs during the summer. Camp teachers teach between one and five weeks (Monday through Friday), either 8 am-12 pm or 8 am-5 pm, depending on classes available.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Develop and prepare age appropriate curriculum and crafts according to given objectives before the camp week begins
  • Teach week-long Zoo Camp classes for children ages 3-13
  • Supervise, mentor, and evaluate Camp Counselors and Teacher’s Assistants
  • Stay within a budget and complete budget reports when purchasing supplies
  • Supervise campers around Zoo grounds
  • Maintain classroom management in all situations, including during special presentations
  • Communicate with Program Coordinator and Teen Coordinator regarding class and Teen behavior issues and successes
  • Provide feedback to parents regarding their children’s daily activities and behavior

Qualifications:

  • Strong organizational and public speaking skills
  • Classroom management experience
  • Curriculum planning and teaching experience
  • Ability to be flexible as schedules change and to think on your feet in all situations
  • At least 2 years of college in an education or science field of study (or comparable experience in a science setting)
  • A degree (preferably in science or education) and/or credential is a plus
  • Knowledge of biology, animal behavior, and /or science education
  • Capable of keeping information about campers and staff confidential
  • Experience working with kids and teens, camp experience is a plus
  • Must pass a background check
  • Must be available for our June 5th training
  • Must be 18 years or older

Zoo Camp Preschool Teacher - Part time, seasonal
Position Summary: Reports to the Education Program Coordinator. Zoo Camp Preschool Teachers design curriculum and plan classes based on objectives provided. These teachers teach in our summer Little Peeps preschool program, presenting a two-hour class to twelve participants each with a parent or Big Buddy. This is a seasonal position.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Develop and prepare age appropriate activities, crafts, and songs according to given objectives before the camp week begins
  • Teach the same class to separate groups of campers Tuesday-Friday
  • Provide a valuable experience both to preschoolers and to parents
  • Supervise, mentor, and evaluate Camp Counselors assigned to your class
  • Stay within a budget and complete budget reports when purchasing supplies
  • Supervise class around Zoo grounds
  • Maintain classroom management in all situations, including during special presentations
