This animal is another example of the clever animal names that the education department comes up with. Monte was born around 1986. He enjoys spending time outside slithering through the grass and he will even go back into his carrier when he is done!
Ball pythons are found in the wooded areas of Africa. They get their name from a defensive strategy that they use to protect themselves from predators. They coil up into a ball with their heads in the middle, looking out for anything that might be coming up to them. They also have heat sensing pits along their mouths that allow them to detect the location of their prey. They eat small mammals, birds, and small reptiles. Monte goes to schools through our Zoomobile program, and you can also see him in our daily stage show!
