Joining more than 100 other zoos nationwide for the Association of Zoos and Aquariums’ “Party for the Planet,” the Sacramento Zoo celebrates Earth Day locally with wildlife and conservation organizations, a rummage sale and educational crafts.
What is a pirate without a parrot or a princess without a frog? This year’s Earth Fest will promote amphibian and parrot conservation. Children are encouraged to come dressed as a pirate or princess. The event will include many opportunities to learn more about amphibians and parrots, as well as how to color your world green. While princesses and pirates are roaming Zoo grounds, they can enjoy a pirate ship photo-op, learn about animals from all around the world during the Zoo’s stage show and keeper chats, and explore the many hands-on activities that will be offered. In addition, visitors can discover more about native plants at the Zoo’s Backyard, which includes a children’s play area, nature trail and interactive garden.
The Zoo’s annual Recycle Rummage Sale is also back on Saturday, April 7th, from 9 am to 4 pm. The sale includes books, CDs and videos, t-shirts, toys, stuffed animals, collectibles, animal artwork, jewelry, housewares and other unique items. Admission to the rummage sale is included with Zoo admission and proceeds benefit the Zoo’s Conservation Committee and Green Team. The Sacramento Zoo Conservation Committee raises funds to support wildlife education and conservation both locally and worldwide. The Green Team has a focus to reduce waste, conserve energy and create positive changes at the Zoo and within the community.
As a part of the Zoo’s 85th birthday celebration, guests are also encouraged to share their memories at the video recording booth. The recording booth will only be available at select times throughout the year. Guests who also have pictures or written memories are encouraged to share those through the Sacramento Zoo’s website at saczoo.org.
