Farm-to-Fork for animals and people!
The Sacramento Zoo will be celebrating Farm-to-Fork all week long. 

WHAT’S HAPPENING: The animals and guests at the Sacramento Zoo are proudly participating in Farm-to-Fork week through ongoing programs as well as specials in Kampala Café.

The Sacramento Zoo is a local gem excited to celebrate Farm-to-Fork Week. Along with copious amounts of fresh fruits and vegetables, the animals at the Zoo require bushels of browse (non-toxic leaves and branches) every day. While browse grows throughout the Zoo, there is also a browse garden specifically planted with many treats for various animals that are cut fresh to order. The Zoo also accepts donations of fresh plant clippings from Sacramento residents; it cannot get more fresh and local than that!

A portion of the Zoo’s produce that is fed out to the animals is locally sourced based on seasonality and availability. On average every week the Zoo goes through the following amount of locally-sourced produce:

  • 18 bunches of collard greens
  • 30 bunches of dandelion greens
  • 18 bunches of green chard
  • 24 bunches of spinach green
  • 250 apples
  • 50-pound bag of onions
  • 4 pounds of zucchini
  • 24 ears of corn

In addition to the local, fresh food given to the animals, the year-round Kampala Café focuses on fresh and local produce. Much of the produce, grains, cheese, breads and other products featured in the café are sourced locally:

  • Leafy Greens – Del Rio Botanical in West Sacramento 
  • Dairy – Clover-Stornetta Dairy in Sonoma
  • Olives – MCP Olives in Tehama County
  • Cheese – Sierra Nevada Cheese Company in Willows
  • Edible Flowers – Fresh Origins MicroGreens in San Marcos
  • Bread – Grateful Bread Company in Sacramento
  • Vinegar – Sparrow Lane Vinegar in Napa Valley

During Farm-to-Fork Week, the Zoo is placing a special focus on local and fresh fare. The Zoo’s chef has created lunch specials to be served in Kampala Café all week. 

With an abundance of fresh produce available from local farms year-round, there are many opportunities for the Zoo, local restaurants and other organizations to join the Farm-to-Fork movement. The Sacramento Zoo and its staff are excited to raise awareness and are continually searching for new ways to incorporate regionally-grown products into daily operations.

Sacramento Zoo – Wildly Inspiring!

Open since 1927, the Sacramento Zoo is home to more than 500 native, rare and endangered animals and is one of over 200 accredited institutions of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums.  Located near the corner of Land Park Drive and Sutterville Road in William Land Park, the Zoo is wholly managed by the non-profit Sacramento Zoological Society.  This Sacramento treasure inspires conservation awareness through education and recreation.  Open daily from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm, general admission is $11.25; children ages 2-11 are $7.25 and one and under are admitted free.  Parking is free throughout the park or ride Regional Transit bus #6.
