Employee Profile: Phyllis Pratt

Categories: Employee of the Month

Each month a Zoo staff member is selected as Employee of the Month. The individual selected has gone above and beyond their job description and embodies the core values of Zoo. He or she leads with animal welfare, obsesses over service, works smart with heart, and ultimately leaves the world a better place.

Phyllis PrattSometimes some of the most valuable and important work at the Sacramento Zoo happens behind the scenes. Phyllis Pratt, human resources manager at the zoo, spends much of her time working for all of us quietly and behind the scenes. Phyllis helps zoo staff get hired, oversees the benefits program, and much more. Along the way, she never loses sight of being a kind, generous person who always has everyone’s best interests at heart.

Prior to coming to the zoo Phyllis served in management positions for more than 30 years, but most recently was the human resource generalist for a non-profit mental health agency. Phyllis applied for the position at the zoo because as she says, “who doesn’t want to work at the zoo?” but she stays because “this is truly an incredible and amazing place. From the culture, to the staff and their passion for all that they do, to the beautiful setting, amazing leadership and because this place matters. Because we are valued, because we are supported, because we make a difference.”

While Phyllis loves spending time at the zoo and hanging out with the sloth, she stays busy outside of work as well. Some of her favorite activities include knitting and crocheting gifts and donations, spending time with her grandchildren, camping (the old fashion way-in a tent), and she is an avid Disney fan who prefers vintage to modern.

Her dedication and the genuine care she shows for staff as individuals, her excitement about the zoo, and her calm and professional efforts to ensure that staff work well together as a team all make Phyllis a critical part of the Sacramento Zoo team…she keeps us all ’knit’ together!
