Each month a zoo staff member is selected as employee of the month. The individual selected has gone above and beyond their job description and embodies the core values of the zoo. He or she leads with animal welfare, obsesses over service, works smart with heart, and ultimately leaves the world a better place.
Ellis’s nomination as employee of the month is not about a specific occasion or gesture, it’s more about someone who consistently embraces the zoo’s core values. Never do you see Ellis without a smile on his face, nor walk by him without hearing an enthusiastic HELLO, or a kind word.
He may be a recent addition to the Sacramento Zoo’s grounds team, but Ellis is no stranger here. Since August 2004 Ellis has volunteered at the Sacramento Zoo in a variety of capacities, all while earning his B.A. and then an M.A. in communication with a focus on rhetoric. Knowing that he wanted to work with animals, Ellis has volunteered as a keeper aide, reptile department intern where he focused on water treatment, was an Interpretive Center intern, and more. While Ellis still has high aspirations of moving on to other positions within the zoo world where he will use the knowledge he gained in his studies, he is currently happy to be at the zoo in general and we are grateful to have him spreading his cheer and jovial disposition with all.
Outside of work Ellis enjoys writing poetry, bike riding, sports and socializing. A quote that Ellis enjoys and lives by is, “be yourself because everyone else is taken,” by Oscar Wilde.
Ellis epitomizes the Sacramento Zoo’s core values: obsess over service, respect each other and succeed together, own it and do it right AND leave the world a better place! He is a very hard worker, but no matter how hard he is working, Ellis manages to keep a great attitude and spreads happiness and positivity wherever he goes! The world needs more Ellis’.
