Animal Profile: Fulvous Whistling Ducks

Poseidon

Poseidon, Hermes, and Athena are the well-known fulvous whistling ducks of the Sacramento Zoo. Hatched in two clutches, Poseidon and Hermes were born in July 2013 and the younger male, Athena, was born in November 2014. The three fulvous whistling ducks were hatched and hand raised as animal ambassadors at the Sacramento Zoo and seem to enjoy each other’s company.

The fulvous whistling ducks’ band colors around their ankle help identify and differentiate them from one another. Each of the three ducks has a different band color from red, blue, or green. Poseidon and Hermes engage more with people and love to have their heads scratched while Athena is more selectively friendly. As differences arise in personality, one thing they have in common is the enjoyment they seem to get out of interacting with children and having their favorite treat; crickets.

The fulvous whistling ducks are very popular in the preschool program as they truly love to interact with children. They also take part in Zoomobile programs and occasionally show off in stage shows. Staff often refer to them as hand-ducks for the way they comfortably stand on the palm of their caretakers’ hands.
