New at the Zoo: February

Categories: Visitor Services

There is always something new at the zoo! Here are some things that have happened at the Sacramento Zoo in the last month as well as a not to miss event this weekend.

I Heart Sacramento Zoo
A daytime date idea for couples or an outing for the family this Sunday at the Sacramento Zoo. I Heart Sacramento Zoo is a day organized by the Sacramento Zoo Teen volunteers. The event features valentine-themed animal enrichments, informative talks and activity tables – all included with general admission. Zoo Teens will also provide interactive games and activities.

Zoofari MarketReduced Plastic Packaging at the Zoofari Market
The zoo’s gift store is continuing its commitment to reduce plastic. Service Systems Associates (SSA), the company that manages the Zoofari Market, is taking steps company-wide to make greener purchasing choices. One of the ways they are accomplishing the daunting task is by identifying and working with vendors who do not use single-use plastic packaging (think plastic wrap, plastic dust covers, etc.). The new Zoo Quest toys are just the first step in an ongoing initiative. Come visit Zoofari Market to purchase the new Zoo Quest toys and support a greener alternative.

New Fencing on Big Cat Row
The facilities department has been hard at work installing new fencing in front of the big cat exhibits. A project of that scope requires a lot of coordination between the animal care and facilities teams to ensure that the impact to the animals and guests is minimal. The finished product looks great!

Santa Paws Visited
Thanks to generous zoo supporters, the Amazon Santa Paws Wish List was a huge success! By visiting the Sacramento Zoo’s holiday wish list on Amazon, donors were able to choose from a list of carefully curated toys and enrichment for the zoo’s animals and have them shipped directly to the zoo.

Over 56 items were donated in December, giving many zoo residents new items to sniff, stomp, chase and chew over the last month. These items included play tunnels for the red pandas, a bubble machine for the apes, tiny piñatas for the birds and so much more! Thank you to everyone who donated!

Want to donate toys and enrichment for the animals all year long? Visit the year-round wish list to purchase an item and it will be shipped right to the zoo!

Plants in the Reptile House
One of our reptile caretakers has a green thumb, who knew? Over the last year zookeeper Bill has been cultivating his passion for plants and is now using his knowledge to enrich the lives of our Reptile House residents. He has been curating plant collections behind-the-scenes, selecting those that will meet the needs of the individual animals, help maintain air quality, and add to the substrate. Over the next month, as the plants mature Bill will continue placing them in exhibits.

Dippin DotsKampala Café & Dippin’ Dot Receive Facelifts!
The Kampala Café and Dippin’ Dots stand both received much-deserved facelifts. New flooring, updated plumbing and electrical, and some updates to the kitchen will all help the team run smoother and better serve our guests. The Dippin’ Dots shack received some new paneling around the front to give it an updated look.
