Multi-organization Safety Exercise at the Sacramento Zoo
WHAT’S HAPPENING: The Sacramento Zoo is teaming up with the Sacramento Fire Department, Sacramento Police Department and UC Davis Medical Center to perform a safety exercise at the Zoo on November 18 from 1 to 5pm. The Zoo will stop selling tickets on the 18th at 12:30pm and all guests inside the Zoo will be asked to leave by 1:30pm so that the drill can be performed. The Zoo will resume winter visitor hours the next day.
The safety exercise scenario will consist of a small aircraft crashing into the stage canopy on the Zoo’s Reptile House Lawn. The fictitious crash will injure 25-30 victims of various ages from a school group and Zoo staff.
The Sacramento Zoo performs a minimum of four safety drills throughout the year in order to prepare for a variety of scenarios.
WHERE: Sacramento Zoo, at the corner of Land Park Dr. and Sutterville Rd. in William Land Park.
WHEN: The safety exercise will be from 1-5pm on Monday, November 18, 2013. The first hour will consist of planning and the last hour will be a wrap-up with the actual exercise lasting from 2-4pm. The Zoo will stop admitting guests at 12:30pm.
WHO: The Sacramento Zoo, Sacramento Fire Department, Sacramento Police Department and UC Davis Medical Center will all participate in the safety exercise.
WHY: The safety exercise is an opportunity for staff of all participating organizations to rehearse and learn their part in case of an emergency. The goal is to be able to react quickly in any emergency and be in sync with other organizations that would potentially play a part in an emergency.
CONTACT: If you are media and would like to cover this story or be present at the safety exercise please email Tonja Candelaria or call (916) 808-7446.
