There are many conservation programs at the Zoo and they take many forms. In addition to the projects locally and globally that we support and our efforts on Zoo grounds, we partner with many other organizations to make a difference. Here is a list of organizations we feel deserve your support and can help you make a difference.
American Association of Zoo Keepers (AAZK)
AAZK is a nonprofit volunteer organization made up of professional zoo keepers and other interested persons dedicated to professional animal care and conservation.
Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA)
AZA is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the advancement of accredited zoos and aquariums in the areas of animal care, wildlife conservation, education and science. AZA is America’s leading accrediting organization for zoos and aquariums and accredits only those institutions that have achieved rigorous standards for animal care, education, wildlife conservation and science.
Snow Leopard Trust
Founded in 1981, the Snow Leopard Trust is the largest and oldest organization working solely to protect the endangered snow leopard and its Central Asian habitat.
Mountain Gorilla Veterinary Project
The Mountain Gorilla Veterinary Project’s mission is to improve the sustainability of mountain gorilla populations via health monitoring, lifesaving veterinary care, relevant health studies, and the dissemination of information.
Lindsay Wildlife Museum
Founded in Walnut Creek in 1955, the museum’s programs connect people with wildlife to inspire responsibility and respect for the world we share. The museum houses a hands-on discovery room for children, a pet education section with small domestic animals and changing natural history and art exhibits. The on-site wildlife rehabilitation center is one of the oldest and largest wildlife hospitals in the United States, treating nearly 6,000 injured or orphaned wild animals each year.
Wildlife Care Association
Wildlife Care Association is a non-profit organization that rehabilitates injured, orphaned and sick wild animals from the greater Sacramento area.
Bat Conservation International
Based in Austin, Texas, Bat Conservation International is devoted to conservation, education, and research initiatives involving bats and the ecosystems they serve. It was founded in 1982, as scientists around the world became concerned that bats essential to the balance of nature and human economies were in alarming decline. Under the founding guidance of Dr. Merlin Tuttle, an internationally recognized authority on bats.
A program of Monterey Bay Aquarium designed to raise consumer awareness about the importance of buying seafood from sustainable sources. We recommend which seafood to buy or avoid, helping consumers to become advocates for environmentally friendly seafood.
Cosumnes River Preserve
The Consumnes River Preserve encompasses and protects thousands of acres of wetlands and adjacent uplands. These lands, once considered insect ridden, unattractive, and even dangerous, today are recognized as beautiful places with important roles in local and global ecology. Wetlands provide a diverse habitat critical to the survival of many kinds of plant and animal life. The Cosumnes River Preserve is recognized as one of California’s most significant natural areas.
The Nature Conservancy
Their mission is to preserve the plants, animals and natural communities that represent the diversity of life on Earth by protecting the lands and waters they need to survive. TNC has developed a strategic, science-based planning process, called Conservation by Design, which helps identify the highest-priority places—landscapes and seascapes that, if conserved, promise to ensure biodiversity over the long term.
The Wildlife Society
Founded in 1937, the Wildlife Society is an international, non-profit scientific and educational organization serving and representing wildlife professionals in all areas of wildlife conservation and resource management. Our goal is to promote excellence in wildlife stewardship through science and education.
